Jeffrey J. Mims, Jr, District 3

Jeffrey J. Mims, Jr. joins the State Board of Education after a lifetime of experience in primary and secondary education, including a four-term as President of the Dayton Board of Education Mr. Mims served more than 35 years with the Dayton Public Schools, most recently as the Director of Legislative Affairs, Compliance, and Community Relations. His diverse roles in the district included garnering support for equitable funding of Ohio’s public schools, and his legislative efforts helped to pave the way for Ohio’s School Facilities Program. Prior to that, he was an elementary teacher and, later, a high school teacher.

As President of the Dayton Education Association (DEA) for six consecutive terms (1983-88), his strong relationship-building skills proved to be vital during the implementation of city district’s desegregation programs. During his tenure, Mr. Mims negotiated the districts’ first multi-year contract between the DEA and the Dayton Board of Education.

Mr. Mims is an Executive Board Member for the Council of the Great City Schools, Chairperson for the Urban 21 Ohio School Board Coalition, Steering Committee Member with the Dayton Dialogue on Race, Steering Committee Member for the Equity & Adequacy School Funding Coalition and the Central State University Department of Education’s Advisory Committee.

A Vietnam veteran, Mr. Mims is a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the Beautillion Drillmaster Mentor with the Jack and Jill of America, Inc., (36 years) and a volunteer with the YMCA Mentors Matter Program. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Art, Art Education and Industrial Technology from Central State University and his Master of Science Degree in Education at Wright State University.

As the State Board member from the 3rd District, Mr. Mims represents Butler, Miami and Montgomery Counties and part of Darke County. His term expires on Dec. 31, 2014.
